Nevada Has Autism Insurance Coverage Requirements
Nevada law includes coverage requirements for autism spectrum disorder. For many applicable plans, coverage includes screening, diagnosis, and treatment for autism. This can include Applied Behavior Analysis, also known as ABA therapy, when it is part of a medically necessary treatment plan.
Nevada’s law generally applies to children under age 18, or until age 22 if the child is still enrolled in high school.

Nevada’s autism coverage rules include several types of care connected to autism treatment. Depending on the plan and medical necessity, covered services may include:

Is There a Coverage Limit for ABA Therapy in Nevada?
Yes. Nevada law allows an annual ABA benefit limit. Current Nevada statute lists coverage for ABA treatment at the actuarial equivalent of $72,000 per year for applicable plans.
This does not mean every child automatically receives that amount of therapy. Insurance companies usually review the child’s diagnosis, treatment plan, recommended hours, and medical necessity before approving services.

Does Nevada Medicaid Cover ABA Therapy?
Nevada Medicaid has guidance for Applied Behavior Analysis providers. According to Nevada Medicaid’s ABA billing guide, developmental screenings through EPSDT include autism spectrum disorder, and adaptive behavioral treatment generally requires prior authorization.
The guide also notes that providers should confirm a valid ASD diagnosis before submitting an ABA request, and the diagnosis may be based on an accepted diagnostic tool or a clinical evaluation using DSM-5 criteria.
Prior Authorization
Before ABA therapy begins, many insurance plans require prior authorization. This is the insurance company’s review process to decide whether services are medically necessary.
- During this step, the insurer may review:
- Your child’s autism diagnosis
- A behavioral assessment
- A treatment plan
- Recommended therapy hours
- Goals for communication, behavior, social skills, or daily living skills
If services are denied or fewer hours are approved than recommended, families may be able to appeal the decision or request more information from the insurance company.
